Start with fit, not just credentials
Every practising Chartered Accountant in India holds the same base qualification. The real differences that matter to your business are experience with businesses like yours, communication style, and how the firm is actually structured to serve you day to day. A short buyer's checklist helps surface those differences early.
Questions worth asking
- "Who specifically will handle my account?" — A named partner, a specific manager, or whoever happens to be free that week? Continuity matters, especially for anything involving notices or disputes.
- "What's your experience in my industry?" — Manufacturing, real estate, IT/SaaS, and NBFCs each have genuinely different compliance and tax nuances. A firm that has actually worked in your sector will ask you sharper questions in the first meeting.
- "How do you structure fees?" — Engagement-based with a written proposal, or open-ended hourly billing with surprises at month-end? Ask to see a sample proposal before committing.
- "What's your turnaround on urgent matters, like a tax notice?" — Some things genuinely can't wait a week. A firm's answer here tells you a lot about how they're staffed.
- "What does onboarding actually look like?" — A clear document checklist and a defined process is a good sign; a vague "just send us everything" is not.
- "Do you offer services beyond compliance?" — If you'll eventually need advisory, Virtual CFO support, or transaction diligence, it's worth knowing upfront whether that's in scope for the firm you're choosing, or whether you'll need to bring in someone else later.
Red flags worth taking seriously
- Reluctance to put fees or scope in writing
- No clear single point of contact
- Vague answers about industry experience
- No process for urgent, time-sensitive matters
A good first conversation
A firm worth engaging should be able to speak concretely about how they'd approach your specific situation in the first conversation — not just recite a general service list. That's usually the clearest early signal of whether it's a good fit.
